Dunedin has a growing population of children who need looking after. With parents out for work during the day, it can be hard to leave the young family members with untrained supervision.
Whether it be care-giving, nannying, or early childhood education, there are many job options in the Childcare sector. Young mums will also find this programme particularly relevant to their needs.Getting a job in early childhood education requires achieving diploma-level qualifications.
Such a learning journey is a big commitment if you are uncertain whether the childcare and child education is the right career path for you. VSTET offers a range of programmes which have a childcare focus and which enable you to decide if a career in childcare suits you. If you decide you don’t want to progress into a such a career, the skills you learn will be invaluable in your own whanau context.

Qualifications in Programme 2022 and 2023
Our programmes are designed to foster interests and lay down key information which will be important further on in life. For 2020, VSTET’s Childcare 4 Youth Programme is at level two and enables you to achieve NCEA L2 with the vocational pathway of “Community and Social Services”.
This programme lets you to not only develop a range of essential life skills and knowledge, but you will have 60 of the 80 credits needed for NCEA L1 and will be able to progress to the level two programme. With the 20 credits of literacy and numeracy in the level two programme you will have both NCEA L1 and NCEA L2.Our programme at level two in the context of childcare, is specifically suited for care-giving and early childcare, and is a foundation for progressing to higher level childcare education programmes. Within this programme of learning you will also cover the requirements for:
- New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills (Level 2)
- New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Learning & Care (Level 2)
Step Up, Step Out (Level 1)
If you don’t already have NCEA L1, and if you feel you would benefit by stepping through level one before stepping up to level two, then we recommend you enroll in:
- Step Up, Step Out (Level 1)
This programme includes topics applicable to a wide variety of sectors, including childcare. The programme focuses on building individual strengths and capabilities. The courses covered include Law Breaking, Cyber Bullying, Personal Wellbeing, Anger Management, Workplace Relationships, and so on.
By the end of this programme students are expected to have gained insight into proper workplace etiquette, and basic protocols for a general work environment.
New Zealand Certificate in Foundation Skills Level 2
This programme has a focus on information skills, including literacy and numeracy, and can be studied in the context of childcare. Equally, learners enrolled in the NCEA L2 vocational pathway ‘community and social services’ in the context of childcare, will be required to develop extensive information skills during the learning process. These skills are aimed at strengthening chances of finding employment.
New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Learning & Care Level 2
From the Step Up, Step Out programme students are able to choose which programme to enroll in next. Early Childhood Learning and Care (Level 2) is composed of topics specific to childcare. The programme broadly covers the following:
- Well-being in early childhood;
- Learning and development in early childhood;
- Support services;
- Child nutrition;
- Safety;
- Behaviour patterns in young children;
- Milestones;
- Play time;
- Positive behavior strategies.
It also includes a range of computing related topics, essential as a means of communicating relevant information to others, and creating and developing resources for young children.
